艾德華 ・ 他凡-普理查生佇一九空二年的克羅伯勒，老爸約翰 ・ 他凡-普理查（John Evans-Pritchard）是聖公會的牧師。他凡-普理查佇咧厝內排行老二路，而且以母親桃樂絲 ・ 艾德華（Dorothea ・ Edward）之姓為名。

一九一六年他凡-普理查進入溫徹斯特公學接受中學教育，閣佇一九二一年就讀牛津大學埃克塞特學院。
