世界魚類資料庫的歷史會當追溯到一九七空年代，彼陣魚仔學家丹尼爾 ・ 保利遮佇咧研究魚仔的增加是毋是佮其魚鰓的形有關係。伊的準講干焦會當用大量的資料測試的時才會當驗證。但當時的資料攏散佈佇海量的文獻內底，欲想會著極其困難。波利便想欲共所有資料集做伙來建立一个資料庫，予科學家會當方便的探求。若是資料會當保證準確無錯，按呢其實功效共非常之大。<br />

波利倩了溫妮 ・ 佛羅伊斯，佇一九八八年將𪜶想欲愛的資料庫軟體編碼成功。該資料庫頭先只收集熱帶魚類資料。隨後擴大到所有的有鰭魚，一九九六年八月登陸全球資訊網。這馬已經是世界上大的魚仔資料庫。一九九五年，其頭一塊 CD-ROM 以「FishBase 一百」為名發佈，隨後逐年攏有發佈 CD。該軟體干焦會當佇小可軟視窗仔 Microsoft Access 最運行。<br />

魚類資料庫干焦收整合年魚類資訊，並無包括細漢時間佮欲成年的魚仔。一九九九年幼魚資料庫成立，其搜集範圍包括魚類浮游生物、魚卵佮幼魚，彌補著世界魚類資料庫的不足。受魚類的資料庫予𪜶激勵，其他的非魚類資料庫嘛開始成立，包括二空空六年成立的世界海洋生物資料庫。<br />
